Networking successfully

Without a doubt, networking is one of the keys to growing your business successfully.

Having networked around the globe, I cringe every single time I see the same networking faux-pas committed over and over again.

In order to better help you NOT commit these networking no-no’s, I have created a list of the most important things I think you should know about networking behavior:

1. Don’t be a serial networker.

This means passing out business cards as fast as you can say “hello, good-bye” and leaving the event without ever really getting to know anyone. People will not remember you and you will not remember them.

Take time to get to know your new contacts and build relationships. You never know when this might pay off for your business or personal life.

2. Follow up.

This is probably the most important rule. Don’t let two weeks pass before you make that “nice to meet you” call or shoot them an email.

I use the 48 hour rule–don’t wait any longer, the sooner the better. You will be forgotten.

3. Don’t expect a fountain of free advice.

People don’t like to feel used. Networking, like any relationship, involves give and take. Don’t assume the person you just met wants to give you $500 worth of advice over cocktails. Follow up and make that appointment!

4. Be consistent.

This rule somewhat ties in with not being a serial networker. I always preach quality networking over the quantity of networking.

How many quality connections can you really make when you jump from group to group and never consistently show up to anything?

If you want to network, commit to a membership and consistently show up to the events. It shows dedication and commitment. I’d much rather do business with a person who has these characteristics.

What is an Entreprenuer Goddess?

“The Entrepreneur Goddess is constantly scanning her surroundings and examining the world around her, looking for the idea that is awaiting just over the horizon.”

An artist of the business world…

There’s an entrepreneur in every woman, but only some of us choose to follow these visions. That’s what sets an Entrepreneur Goddess apart from the rest.

Some women will spend their whole lives not following visions because they lack confidence, the know-how, or simply have no desire to market their creations. If it’s not in their personality or comfort level, that’s okay, women come in all different shapes and sizes.

However, an Entrepreneur Goddess chases her vision and makes it a reality.

The Entrepreneur Goddess is constantly scanning her surroundings and examining the world around her, looking for the idea that is awaiting just over the horizon.

She’s looking for needs that are not being met or a niche to fill. Many times, that “ah-ha!” moment happens when she least expects it, like in a moment of desperation.

An Entrepreneur Goddess is a visionary who is always ahead of the game as well as passionately persistent and determined to make her dream a reality. When she grabs hold of the great idea, she has the confidence, mindset, and initiative to take a risk, knowing exactly what she is gambling.

The Entrepreneur Goddess is an artist of the business world.

Keep it movin’

Whether you are working for yourself at home or working for someone else in an office, it is important to get off your butt at least once a day and exercise.

There is a cool website I discovered called MapMyRun (www.mapmyrun.com) where you can find new running routes, map your own run to find the distance, and keep track of your workouts.

They also have race and event information in addition to discussion boards about all things running.

Anyone can find new running routes and map runs, but if you want to keep track of your workouts you have to become a member (it’s free) by giving them your name, email, and creating a username and password.

Take the time out of your day to do some form of exercise, even if it’s just walking. Use this site to map your walks as well!

I was thinking about getting one of those fancy watches to measure distances, but with MapMyRun, who needs to spend money!

Keep moving,

What do career fairs and entrepreneurs have in common?

When job hunting, it is important to keep in mind the skills you will need in order to run your own business someday.

Although you might still lack the finances and experience, you should never lose sight of your entrepreneurial aspirations. Think: How can this job help me get where I want to be?

Speaking from experience, some career fairs attract companies and jobs you would never want. From police and border patrol work to deliverywomen and kitchen prep work, chances are you are over-qualified.

Nevertheless, it is important to do your homework and go to a career fair prepared.

Study the companies beforehand and check to see if they have any jobs available that aren’t being announced at the event. Perhaps a hotel is at the career fair looking for bellhops, but if you flash your fabulous resumé, they might have a position open in management!

Best of luck and remember: ya gotta do whatcha gotta do…just be sure to gain useful experience!
