As small business owners we all want to save money. If we can help the environment in the process, it’s a huge bonus. The following tips will help you do both– save you money and help the environment!

1. Recycle paper
2. When printing, use both sides
3. Write on scrap paper
4. BYOB- Bring your own bag when shopping for office supplies
5. Eliminate the plastic trash bags that line your wastebasket
6. Lights- turn them off when out of the room and whenever there is sufficient natural lighting
7. Unplug electronic devices not in use
8. Refill ink cartridges instead of buying new ones
9. Save gas- organize errands and meetings with clients so you make fewer trips
10. Pay your bills online and receive statements electronically

Thanks for helping the environment!

Create the ideal work environment

Whether you work at home or in an office, you will get more work done if you are able to work from an ideal environment. What is the ideal environment for the self-employed Entrepreneur Goddess? This depends on you and your small business situation. Here are some things to think about for both quickfixes and major overhauls:

QUICK FIXES
Noise
Do you work better in a very quiet environment or with background noise? I find that I do well with a mixture of both, depending on the project. My home office is very quiet with few distractions. Sometimes to stimulate creativity, I feel I need to add a bit of zest to my life… I tune to an itunes radio station or podcast. Other days when I really miss friendly faces, I pack the laptop and hang out at my favorite local coffee joint that offers free wireless internet. Really, it’s the best of both worlds! Whether you use a white noise machine, play classical music, or prefer cafĂ© surfing it is important to identify and place yourself in your ideal work environment. Your small business and bank account will thank you!

Clutter
Nothing blocks my creativity more than a messy desk and a messy floor around my desk. Ick. For others, it is precisely the clutter in their lives that makes the wheels turn in their head. I’ll never get that, but whatever floats your boat. I notice that when I’m in a clutter-free and organized environment, my entrepreneurial skills are maximized. Know what your limits are and be sure to keep the clutter in check, you don’t want your business to suffer as a result.

Decorations
Decorating your work area with small objects and photos you love will help you better maintain and grow your business. Your surroundings can make all the difference in the world. Why do you want to be staring at something you can’t stand day after day? Think about revamping your workplace by adding meaningful decorations or beautiful plants. Let your creativity flow!

Comfort
I always work where I’m comfortable. Sometimes I work from my desk whereas other times I might decide to work from the kitchen counter, couch, dining room table, or floor. I go wherever my mood and muscles take me. Why limit yourself? Your comfort is directly reflected in your work. And yes, I’m writing this entry sprawled out on my office floor.

MAJOR OVERHAULS

Noise
If the quickfixes don’t work for you, it’s time to start thinking about a major overhaul in your work place. In order to properly conduct business and be successful at what you do, it is imperative you place yourself in the best environment possible. Do you need a sound proof wall installed in your office or do you need to move your office to a different location? If you have coworkers, family members, or friends pestering you in your office during your work hours, it is time you set some serious ground rules. My husband and I have separate offices and I know this adds to our success in both business and marriage. Get creative and find a solution to your noise problems that works for both you and your business!

Clutter
When you can’t get clutter under control by simply going through your paperwork and reorganizing, it’s time for a major clutter overhaul. Time to get some storage containers to take care of your issues! If you don’t feel capable of organizing and decluttering yourself, you need to hire a professional to help. It’ll cost more money in the short-term, but save your business big bucks in the long-term!

Decorations
Sick of your dreary office? Time for a major decorating overhaul! When the small objects and plants don’t do the trick, try painting a wall or two or four! Decide whether you need a color to energize you, relax you, or stimulate your creativity. Check online or with you local paint store to decide what color best fits your needs.

Comfort
If you don’t feel comfortable sitting at your desk, yet opt out of the floor or kitchen table options…it’s time for, you guessed it, a comfort overhaul! Perhaps you should reconsider buying, selling, or trading your desk and/or chair. Check out bargains online or in your local furniture store.

Peace and relaxation,
Entrepreneur Goddess
