Selling your product on Amazon

July 10, 2008 by Katie Skow

People are always asking me how to sell products on Amazon.com. Because of the constant inquiries, I’ve decided to let my favorite readers in on everything they need to know about dealing with Amazon.com!

Because there is so much information on the topic, this has turned into the first part in a series of articles on the subject.

Part 1: Selling products “on-demand”
When you sell a product “on-demand” you don’t need to carry inventory. When someone places your DVD or book into their shopping cart and purchases the item, the dvd or book is produced, packaged, and shipped to the client. There are many companies that will take care of your on-demand needs on-demand, so it’s just a matter of finding the company that is a good fit for your product.

The best part about selling on-demand is that you can be anywhere and doing anything while passive income makes its way into your bank account. Sure, the company takes a higher commission but believe me, it’s well worth the money. My exercise video, Pompilates, is for sale on-demand through Amazon. However, buyers don’t know this because the video looks just like every other product for sale on the site.

Here’s how I do it:
I use
Create Space, which is a subsidiary of Amazon. They can take care of selling your on-demand books, DVDs, or audio CDs. This means you don’t deal with inventory, answering phone calls, customer service, returns, or shipping! Signing up with Create Space is easy and just about anyone can create an account, all you need is a completed product.

Here’s how you sell “on-demand” products on Amazon:

1. Become a member of Create Space. It’s free and takes a few seconds.

2. Fill in the blanks. Create Space wants to know your title, description, copyright information, release date, any awards or reviews for your product, and a few other important details.

3. Upload your artwork. This includes the DVD case cover and the sticker that will go on the disc itself.

4. Create your list price. How much will you charge? Create Space charges $4.95 per DVD for one order. For sales made on Amazon.com, they take 45% of the sale. You get the rest. In other words, if you sell a DVD for $25 on Amazon, they get $8.70 and you get $16.30 (the list price minus their share). However, if a video is sold on the Create Space e-store, they only take home a 15% profit.

5. Create Space provides you with a Title ID.

6. You ship your master DVD to Create Space and wait for final approval. Within weeks, they put your artwork together with a copy of your video and send you a proof of the finished product for final approval.

7. Once approved, your title is for sale on Create Space and you can apply for immediate approval on Amazon.com. It might take up to three weeks for your title and artwork to appear on Amazon. Make sure all the information you send to Amazon is accurate, because any changes will take just as long to be corrected.

Random Advice:

UPC: If you are selling on Amazon, don’t worry about getting a UPC (proof of purchase) on your own because they have their own system and it will be removed.

Artwork: Create Space charges $75/hour for any graphic design or changes to artwork. It’s probably in your best interest to outsource this task to a designer you trust.

Books and audio: Check Create Space for further details to sell these products on- demand.

Amazon Associates: Join this program to sell your products as well as other products you recommend on Amazon.
