Interested in how the global economy works?

Riches Among the Ruins: Adventures in the Dark Corners of the Global Economy gives a first-hand account of a real life “Indiana Jones” investing into the markets of the developing world.

Aspiring for a life beyond that of his successfully middle class Jewish parents, Robert P. Smith joins USAID right out of college to learn more about the world in which he lives. His first assignments take him to Vietnam during the war and then to Brazil, where he gets his first glimpse into the intricacies of emerging-market lending.

Returning to Boston, Smith is convinced there’s still more to life than settling into a cushy job in his father’s law firm so he embarks on a new career as an international debt trader. From dangers and blasts in 1980s El Salvador to risking his life after the recent war in Iraq, Smith will seemingly go to any length in search of a fortune.

While I’m not suggusting you go Robert P. Smith-Indiana Jones on us- please don’t- this is nevertheless, an interesting real life action novel with fascinating insight into developing markets around the world.
